The Vancouver International Black Film Festival (VIBFF) is inviting submissions for a special community screening as part of its 2026 BlackMarket Industry Series, taking place during this year's festival from December 11–15, 2026.
This initiative aims to spotlight local Black filmmaking talent, create opportunities for artistic visibility, and celebrate the diverse experiences, perspectives, and narratives of Black communities in Vancouver.
🎥 An Opportunity to Amplify Black Stories
Film has always been a powerful medium for cultural expression, historical preservation, resistance, and community connection.
For Black filmmakers, storytelling offers an opportunity to challenge dominant narratives, reclaim representation, document lived experiences, and imagine new possibilities for our collective futures.
Through its BlackMarket Industry Series, VIBFF is creating space for emerging and established local filmmakers to share their work with audiences and participate in meaningful conversations about their creative journeys.
Selected short films will be screened during the festival, followed by a Q&A panel, providing filmmakers with an opportunity to discuss their work, creative processes, and perspectives.
🎞️ Who Can Submit?
The festival is seeking submissions from local Vancouver Black filmmakers whose work meets the following criteria:
- Film length: Under 15 minutes
- Completion date: Completed in 2023 or later
- Filmmaker eligibility: Local Black filmmakers based in Vancouver
- Screening opportunity: Selected films will be showcased during VIBFF 2026, followed by a Q&A panel

✊🏿 Why Black Storytelling Matters
At Afro Van Connect Society, we believe that Black storytelling is essential to cultural preservation, creative empowerment, and building stronger, more connected communities.
Through our Black Spaces Initiative, we advocate for spaces where Black artists, filmmakers, cultural workers, and community members can create, collaborate, and share their experiences without barriers to representation.
Supporting Black filmmakers means more than providing opportunities for visibility. It means investing in cultural infrastructure, strengthening creative economies, preserving community histories, and ensuring that Black voices remain central to the stories being told about our communities.
Initiatives such as the Vancouver International Black Film Festival demonstrate the importance of creating platforms where Black creativity can thrive and where emerging artists can build meaningful connections within the cultural sector.
