Queer Love in Colour Returns: Celebrating Identity, Connection, and Community in Vancouver

Afro Van Connect Society | Community News & Stories

Community is more than a place to gather. It is where we find belonging, celebrate our identities, build relationships, and discover the freedom to be ourselves.

Afro Van Connect Society is excited to share the return of Queer Love in Colour, a free monthly peer-led gathering organized by QMUNITY, dedicated to creating affirming spaces for queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (QTBIPOC) in Vancouver.

Following a hiatus, this important community initiative has relaunched with a renewed commitment to connection, creativity, collective wellness, and belonging.

Creating Spaces Where Everyone Belongs

For many members of Black, Indigenous, and racialized 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, finding spaces where their identities and lived experiences are fully understood can be challenging.

Experiences shaped by race, culture, gender, and sexuality often intersect in ways that are overlooked within traditional community and wellness settings.

Queer Love in Colour responds to this need by offering a welcoming environment where participants can connect with others who understand these intersections, develop friendships, and explore creative approaches to personal and collective well-being.

The program is rooted in an inclusive, trauma-informed, and decolonizing approach that encourages participants to embrace joy, curiosity, play, and authentic self-expression.

Whether someone is new to Vancouver, looking to expand their social circle, or searching for a space where they can simply be themselves, Queer Love in Colour offers an opportunity to experience community without judgment or expectations.

The Power of Creative Wellness and Collective Care

Creativity has long played an important role in how marginalized communities preserve cultural knowledge, express identity, navigate adversity, and build solidarity.

Through its focus on creative wellness, Queer Love in Colour recognizes that well-being is not only an individual experience but also something nurtured through meaningful relationships, cultural affirmation, and shared experiences.

The group creates opportunities for participants to explore connection through creativity while fostering an environment of mutual respect and collective care.

Importantly, participants do not need previous experience, existing connections, or special preparation to attend.

Everyone is welcome to arrive exactly as they are.

Building Bridges Through Community Partnerships

At Afro Van Connect Society, we understand the importance of culturally relevant spaces that empower communities to define their own experiences and futures.

Our Black Spaces Initiative is grounded in the belief that community spaces are essential to cultural expression, collective healing, education, and social transformation.

Initiatives like Queer Love in Colour demonstrate how community-led programming can help address isolation, strengthen relationships, and foster a deeper sense of belonging.

We recognize that Black communities are diverse and that meaningful community building must also acknowledge the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, ability, and cultural identity.

Supporting and amplifying initiatives that centre these experiences is an important part of creating more equitable and inclusive communities.

We commend QMUNITY for its continued commitment to providing accessible peer support and community programming for 2SLGBTQIA+ people throughout British Columbia.

Help Spread the Word

Community spaces become stronger when more people know they exist.

We encourage our members, partners, artists, cultural practitioners, and community networks to share this opportunity with anyone who may be interested in connecting with Vancouver's QTBIPOC community.

Sometimes, a simple invitation can be the beginning of a meaningful friendship, a new support network, or a renewed sense of belonging.

Because everyone deserves spaces where their identity is celebrated, their experiences are respected, and their presence matters.

Afro Van Connect Society is pleased to share this community opportunity in support of QMUNITY's ongoing work to strengthen connection, wellness, and belonging.
